Binsar, the jewel of Kumaon, untouched and virgin, is seldom visited. This quaint locale being one of the most beautiful natural surrounds in the hills offers solitude, quietude and a reflective and contemplative setting. This former capital of the Chand Rajas is 34 km from Almora.
Binsar hills known as Jhandi Dhar, rising to a height of 2412 m, offer an excellent view of Almora town, Kumaon Hills and the greater Himalayas. This idyllic settlement consists of a 300-km stretch of famous peaks, which include Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Trishul, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Panchchuli. A walk through the dense oak and rhododendron forest leads to a vantage point at the summit, which gives an uncluttered view of the Himalayan range and the surrounding valley.
The surroundings are flourishing with alpine flora, ferns, hanging moss and countless species of wild flowers. The beautiful bird sanctuary is a paradise for bird watchers with very good sightings of the Khaleej Pheasant and the Koklaj Pheasant.
